Young Jesus Chronicles

Download as MP3

This time I talked with Spencer Smith and Mark Penta about their book Young Jesus Chronicles, a collection of newspaper-style one-panel cartoons about the childhood and youth of Jesus of Nazareth. When I first saw some of the cartoons in this book, I was so struck by the charm and lightheartedness with which they approach the often overly serious topic of religion, I knew I had to speak with the authors. So, on The Big Idea, we talked about faith, humor and the phenomenon that is Young Jesus Chronicles. Apologies for the poor sound quality of the telephone audio. If you can look (and hear!) beyond that, get ready to be intrigued...

(By the way, you can buy the book at Amazon.com.)

Holi Hai!

Download as MP3

This time on the Big Idea, we talk about the Hindu festival of Holi, a celebration of color, joy, love, the rebirth of spring and the victory of good over evil--in short, positivity all around. Famously, on this holiday people traditionally throw colored water and powder at each other in an exhilarating melee of colors and playful fun. I am joined by Shubham Sindhwani and Sumaita Rahim from McGill University's Indian Students Association, who share with me their insights and experiences of this festival, both from their respective birth countries (India and Bangladesh) and from the events organized by fans of the holiday here in Montreal.

They also provide a heads-up for anyone interested in experiencing Holi first-hand here in Montreal: an ISA-run Holi celebration for any and all who want to participate in this festival on this Saturday, March 13, 8pm-3am at Bharat Bhawan, at 4225 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest.
