In this episode, I talk with Peter Huish, an Anglican deacon and a local prison chaplain with the Montreal-Southwest Community Ministry. We chat about his work, about life in prison and about the spiritual journeys that can be part of that life. The show features "Care of Cell 44" by the Zombies and and ends with "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash.

Happy Easter!
Download as MP3
This episode, I have a conversation with Rev. Carl Scovel, retired Unitarian Universalist minister and long-time pastor of historic King's Chapel in Boston. We discuss the sacred and secular significance of the holiday of Easter.
Also, listen for Eric Bibb's blues rendition of "I Want Jesus to Walk With Me" (Rev. Scovel's request) and some Johnny Cash towards the end.

Young Jesus Chronicles
Download as MP3
This time I talked with Spencer Smith and Mark Penta about their book Young Jesus Chronicles, a collection of newspaper-style one-panel cartoons about the childhood and youth of Jesus of Nazareth. When I first saw some of the cartoons in this book, I was so struck by the charm and lightheartedness with which they approach the often overly serious topic of religion, I knew I had to speak with the authors. So, on The Big Idea, we talked about faith, humor and the phenomenon that is Young Jesus Chronicles. Apologies for the poor sound quality of the telephone audio. If you can look (and hear!) beyond that, get ready to be intrigued...
(By the way, you can buy the book at Amazon.com.)

Holi Hai!
Download as MP3
This time on the Big Idea, we talk about the Hindu festival of Holi, a celebration of color, joy, love, the rebirth of spring and the victory of good over evil--in short, positivity all around. Famously, on this holiday people traditionally throw colored water and powder at each other in an exhilarating melee of colors and playful fun. I am joined by Shubham Sindhwani and Sumaita Rahim from McGill University's Indian Students Association, who share with me their insights and experiences of this festival, both from their respective birth countries (India and Bangladesh) and from the events organized by fans of the holiday here in Montreal.
They also provide a heads-up for anyone interested in experiencing Holi first-hand here in Montreal: an ISA-run Holi celebration for any and all who want to participate in this festival on this Saturday, March 13, 8pm-3am at Bharat Bhawan, at 4225 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest. Check it out at: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=372421952213

Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?
Download as MP3
Ever since "The Da Vinci Code", there have been a host of high-profile media "revelations" about Jesus ("The Jesus Family Tomb", "The Gospel of Judas")--so much so that we now seem to be getting our information about this interesting historical personage primarily from The Discovery Channel and National Geographic. So, to counteract this in typical non-conformist CKUT fashion, this Christmas episode of The Big Idea is all about Jesus. I talk with Ian Henderson, Associate Professor of New Testament Studies at McGill University, about the historical figure Jesus of Nazareth--what we really, reliably can know about him and how we can understand all those flashy documentaries.

Queer Faith
Download as MP3
On this episode of the Big Idea, I talk with Quinn Albaugh about her "queer faith". Quinn is a student at McGill University, a columnist at the McGill Daily newspaper, an openly transgender person and a committed Anglican Christian. Quinn came to my attention when she wrote an article entitle "Queer Faith", in which she defended the compatibility of queerness and faith against naysayers on the left and right. This time on the Big Idea, she shares her perspective with me and anyone listening out there. "She/He/They who have ears, let him/her/them hear!"

Neo-Paganism
Download as MP3
This time we talk about contemporary Paganism and the pagan meaning of Halloween. I am joined by Scarlet Cougar from the Montreal pagan supply store Melange Magique (http://www.themagicalblend.com/) and Hobbes, a Pagan writer and storyteller involved in the Montreal Pagan Resource Center (http://www.paganuniverse.com/mprc/). We discuss what Paganism is, what it means to be a Pagan today and how they approach holidays we would not usually connect with anything too religious. Hobbes and I also sing a (somewhat altered) Christmas carol towards the end!
On the show, Hobbes plugged an event called the Montreal Witches Masquerade Ball, happening on October 30th. What he didn't get to mention is that it takes place at 6870 Terrebonne. More information is available at http://www.paganuniverse.com/mprc/. Just scroll down and you'll see it...
